Annual Ornament - The Old Federal Building
HHDA's annual ornament is
still available! This year we selected the
Old Federal Courthouse at the corner of Pine and
Forrest. Built in 1910, this building was the
first in Hattiesburg to be added to the National
Register of Historic Places. It was designed by
architect John Taylor Knox and constructed as
Hattiesburg's third Post Office. The
site is believed to be the location where; in 1880,
William Harris Hardy, founder of Hattiesburg; sat on the
banks of Gordon's Creek, spread out his map of
Mississippi and traced the line of the New Orleans and
Northeastern Railroad. He decided to name the city
for his wife Hattie Lott Hardy.
Ornaments are exclusively
available at downtown merchants. Cost $10.
You may also find ornaments from previous years if you
need to complete your collection. These make great
gifts! |
